However, if you don’t need portability and you’ve got an appropriate space, don’t dismiss a workbench or wall mounted bike clamp. They’re more stable and cheaper than floor mounted bike stands.

I’m going to divide those looking for a bike repair stand into two distinct groups: weekend and daily mechanics. Workbench and wall mounted stands can also be divided into the more economical options that are good enough for weekend mechanics and the more durable (but expensive) stands that are best if you’re a daily user. Most, (but not all) repair stands can be made taller or shorter. This is important if you are very tall (but less so if you’re particularly small!). There is still plenty of metal on bikes so if they're frequently exposed to rain, they're likely to corrode. At the very least, consider buying a rain cover for your bike, and if your budget, and space allow, opt for a heavy-duty secure shelter. There is another way to look at efficiency though. Efficiency of space is one interpretation but efficiency of resources is another. Stated more simply, "what's the most affordable way to store a bike?" If that's your angle on efficiency there's really no better solution than a screw-in hook like the one we featured from Park Tool. It works, it's inexpensive, and it also makes pretty good use of space. How do you store expensive bikes? And there's a lot of variation in the weight limits of different stands. So make sure the stand you choose can accommodate the weight of your bike. Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, So how good is it? Well, The Bike Hand bench mount has pretty much the same advantages and disadvantages as the YC-100BH floor stand, to be honest.

On the negative side, the fact that some parts are made from plastic, raises doubts over its long term durability. This is especially the case with the teeth that hold the rotating head in position. This is a high stress part of the clamp. And it would be nice if these were metal (as they are on the YC-100ST).Pay attention to the weight capacity of different repair stands too. E-bikes, cruisers and some city bikes can be really heavy.

It uses the same clamp head as the Bike Hand YC-100BH floor stand (see above). But in this case it’s attached to a metal T bar with a square plate at the bottom, which you will need to bolt onto your work bench (bolts not included!). I've been using the Topeak Dual-touch with three bike mounts for years. In a laundry room with extra vertical space I can just barely fit my wife's bike, my city bike, and my sons mountain bike. As he keeps growing, and his bike keeps getting bigger, I keep adjusting the mount for his bike. He's now up to a 24" wheel though and I've still managed to fit all three. The Topeak Dual-Touch Bike Stand mounts by pushing against the ceiling and floor and it fits multiple bikes. As with the Saris solution, you might get a surprise if you try and fit multiple bikes in a standard room. If you've got a bit more space though, you can go up to four bikes. On the positive side, it’s a lot less expensive than the all metal, Park Tool bench mounts (see below). The 360° rotating head is very easy to adjust. And the 1 - 2.55" (25 - 65mm) clamp jaws will accommodate a wide range a frame sizes. And there can be quite a bit of variability in the maximum and minimum heights so that’s another thing to look for. While many of the options we've included here are for internal storage, some of us just don't have the space to keep our bikes indoors and need to look for an external solution. Likewise, stands like the IceToolz or even the Topeak Flash Stand are half way houses that are going to be frustrating to use and will ultimately be replaced by a proper stand! There’s a huge variety of bike stands to choose from, ranging from the unbelievably cheap to the eye watering expensive.

It’s better to spend a little bit more to get something that’s going to last many years. If you’re a weekend mechanic, you don’t need a professional repair stand. It’s OK to buy a stand that uses some plastic components, as long as it’s high quality plastic! So I would say, if you want something that’s a significant upgrade on the Bike Hand stand, in all respects, you probably need to spend twice as much. Finance is subject to application, financial circumstances and borrowing history. Performance Cycling Limited FRN: 720557 trading as Tredz are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We are a credit broker not a lender – credit is subject to status and affordability and is provided by Mitsubishi HC Capital UK PLC. Terms & Conditions Apply. If you want efficiency, that's all about getting the bikes up off the floor and getting them as close together as possible, often top and tailing them so the handlebars don't clash. This is the best way to store your bike in a limited space. The Topeak PrepStand Pro is certainly not the cheapest bicycle repair stand. But it’s probably the most stable. And it’s the only one with built in electronic scales!Make no mistake: this is a heavy duty, professional bike mount, that will last for years and years. Yes, it’s expensive, but if you’re a daily mechanic, working on lots of different bikes, then it’s undoubtedly worth paying the extra money for the Park Tools mount.
